  • Early Algebra project – appropriate for 7th-8th grade or for the beginning of an Algebra I class
  • Mathematics topics: using variables to describe the relationship between speed and stopping distance and how reaction time adds to the total stopping distance; modeling real world situations with mathematics
  • Social justice issues: Students in the community recognize that speeding down neighborhood roads is a problem. One student in a class was hit by a car. Talks with students gave insight on their opinion of the issue, and the lesson will allow students to understand mathematical implications, like stopping distance, behind speeding. The mathematical knowledge will allow them to argue more objectively on the issue of speeding.
